Friday night lights glare down on many young athletes as Friday football games commence all over the state of Texas. Yet the lights do not only shine down on the players but also on their supporters who have a field-side presence during the games. These are the cheerleaders, and they never fail to encourage both the players and the fans that there is hope for the team no matter what happens on the field. But what does it take to be a cheerleader? Some participants say that you have to be fearless and able to put on a smile even if you just suffered through the most grueling week of classes ever. Others mention the significant amount of time that goes into planning, decorating, and practicing cheers, dances, and stunts for pep rallies. But all agree that you have to be willing to give vocal, enthusiastic support to your team no matter what, and that is exactly what the ACHS Panther Cheerleaders do at every pep rally and game. This year the squad is led by Coach Pennye Oliver and consists of Darby McGee, Jennifer Morrison, Abbey Ham, Monica Roberts, Kimery Oliver, Rebecca Tindol, Jamie Caldwell-Rhodes, Katy Ayers, Nikita Swarna, Hailey Roberts, Ally Brant, and Lauren Gumm. Although the team may not compete during the school year, they do attend a camp during the summer and that has resulted in several new cheers, stunts, and ideas for pep rallies. With several weeks left in the season, everyone should come out to see the cheerleaders and the football players as they continue to represent ACS with heartfelt enthusiasm under the Friday night lights.
